“The Steve Jobs of wine.” – Forbes Magazine
“If you’re looking for Paul Hobbs, you will most likely find him in a vineyard.”
BECKSTOFFER DR. CRANE VINEYARD
ST. HELENA, NAPA VALLEY
Dr. George Belden Crane is credited along with Charles Krug as one of the major founders of the wine industry in Napa Valley. The vineyard in Saint Helena was originally planted in 1858. Characterized by gravelly loam soil, it was replanted with cabernet sauvignon in 1998.
OWNER/MANAGER Andy Beckstoffer
SITE Flat topography with eastern and western exposure
SOIL Gravelly, alluvial soils; Cortina and Bale loam
CLIMATE Saint Helena is one of the warmest areas in the Napa Valley, being the further away from the bay than Carneros or Oakville. It is characterized by long, warm summer days, but does receive a gentle, cooling influence in the form of afternoon breezes that come over the Mayacamas Mountains from the Pacific.

2012 Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard $299.99*
98 Points Robert Parker Of the three Beckstoffer Vineyards, it’s pretty much a joyride as to which one readers may prefer. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane moves more toward the wet rock, blueberry, raspberry fruit spectrum, but still stays dark and foreboding, very concentrated and full-bodied. The great terroir comes through and the wine is distinctive, singular, opulent and rich. Another fabulous success from Paul Hobbs and one more showcase wine for this great vineyard. Anticipated maturity: now-2032.
2013 Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard $299.99*
100 Points Robert Parker The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard has a Mission Haut-Brion-on-steroids character, as it seems to be all gravel pit. Loads of wet pebbles, graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a full-bodied opulence, and just a killer, skyscraper-like mouthfeel and stunning finish make for one of the most provocative and fabulous wines in this portfolio. Drink it over the next 25+ years. This is world-class and can stand up against anything made in 2013.
2014 Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard $299.99*
98-100 Points Robert Parker The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is my favorite again of this grouping and has the potential to be a perfect wine, which is really hitting the bull’s-eye in 2014. Plenty of gravelly notes, blueberry, blackberry and mulberry jump from the glass of this inky bluish purple-colored 2014 Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The good news is that there are 1,200 cases of this, compared to only 752 cases in 2013. It should drink well for 15-20 years.
