Pol Roger takes extreme pride in more than 160 years producing some of the world’s finest Champagne. Founded in 1849, Pol Roger is one of only a few Grande Marque Champagne houses that remains family owned and operated. Pol Roger owns close to 55% of the vineyards used for their Champagne production, a true rarity in this region of large firms. Using strict guidelines, grapes are sourced exclusively from 1er and Grand Cru vineyards that rate at an average of 95 points on the Échelle des Crus classification system. (In each vintage, the Échelle des Crus system, or ladder of growths, operates on a percentile basis to fix grape prices of each cru, or delimited vineyard area in the Champagne appellation; Pol Roger’s vineyards, therefore, rank close to the highest quality possible among the Grande Marque Champagne houses.)
Prior to final blending each lot is aged on its own, separated by village, vineyard, grower and grape variety. Once blended, each bottle of Champagne Pol Roger is aged and hand riddled in the cellars deep below the Epernay château; in fact, all their Champagnes are aged longer than the legal requirement because doing so adds more complexity and fine bubbles in every bottle. In effect, each bottle of Cuvée Champagne is hand-made; 100% of Pol Roger Champagne is produced in its winery, nothing is outsourced. Controlled entirely from vineyard to bottle, Pol Roger Champagnes are the marriage of power and elegance.
“Pol Roger is the ‘gentlemen’s’ Champagne,” as Jean-Paul Kauffman wrote in Voyage en Champagne, adding, “It is not surprising, therefore, that Sir Winston Churchill, and even the British royal family, should have made it their favorite over the years. This refinement reflects a whole lifestyle. It is also a source of infinite pleasure. Pol Roger Champagne has a soul, created by the union of a family’s spirit and the character of a vineyard.”
~Selections To Be Tasted~
Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV $49.99*
Wine Advocate 92 Points: Straw yellow and with a golden hue in color, the Pol Roger NV Reserve Brut displays a brilliant, perfectly ripe but also fresh, highly elegant and refined fruit aroma on the nose; think of cooked pip fruits like pears and apples, but also quince-confiture and yellow stone fruits, such as apricots and peaches intermixed with vanilla, brioche, some nutty flavors and also some white floral notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied Brut is as round and fruit-driven as it is delicate, pure and very elegant. The mousse is deliciously fine and leads this charming and perfectly balanced fizz to a long, aromatic, stunningly dry and slightly mineral, impressively long finish. This is extremely well done Champagne from equal parts of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay sourced in 30 different crus.
Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2004 $ 114.99*
Pol Roger Brut Vintage relies on a majority of Pinot Noir (60%) to provide it’s lush, rich body. The remainder of the blend is made of Chardonnay. Both varietals are sourced from Grand and 1er Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Cote des Blancs.
Wine Enthusiast 95 Points: Just approaching maturity, this rich wine is sumptuous and complex. It has intense fruitiness, with apple and grapefruit flavors that are followed by a tight texture as well as the first signs of toastiness. It has plenty of life yet.
Pol Roger Brut Blanc De Blanc 2004 $129.99*
A favorite of many, the Brut Blanc de Blanc is one of the finest Champagnes produced. This sparkling gem is only released in the finest of vintages. This 100% Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Cote des Blancs.
Wine Spectator 95 Points: Rich with hints of malt bread, golden raisin and honey, but finely balanced by the ample backbone of acidity and chalky texture. Notes of Golden Delicious apple, ground anise and lemon zest chime in and linger on the lengthy, mouthwatering finish.
Pol Roger Prestige Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2004 $299.98*
The friendship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to the 1928 vintage of Pol Roger. This deep friendship continued until his death and created a deep link between the two families. Among his array of famous quotes, Sir Churchill once called Pol Roger “the world’s most drinkable address”.
To commemorate this friendship, Pol Roger produced the premiere release of “Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill” with the 1975 vintage, which was produced in magnum only and released in 1984. Since then, 14 vintages have been produced with 2004 being the 15th. While the exact blend is a family secret, it is believed that the wine is blended to meet the late Churchill’s approval and is most likely a majority of Pinot Noir. Grapes are sourced from old vines located exclusively in Grand Cru vineyards.
Wine Advocate 95+ Points: An intense golden-yellow color dresses the Pol Roger prestige cuvee 2004 Sir Winston Churchill, which opens with a clear, deep, dense, ripe, fresh, pure and elegant bouquet of matured apples, apricots and lemon flavors along with exciting spicy flavors. Although this Brut is already more than 11-years-old, it is dew-fresh and still developing–slowly. This Champagne is highly complex and well structured on the palate, with grapefruit flavors; it is a full-bodied and intense, yet very firm, persistent, fresh and very elegant assemblage of unnamed Grand Cru Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. It reveals a very long and complex, powerful but stimulating finish, and obviously, an eternal youth. The finish is powerful and stringent, and reveals a great, great aging potential.
