~Selections To Be Tasted~
2014 Avinyo Brut Cava Reserva $19.99*
The 2014 Avinyo Cava Reserva shows bright white fruits combined with toast notes. On the palate the wine is fresh, vibrant, and still provides a delicate creaminess to the palate. This exuberant wine pairs well with leeks, sausages, romesco, tomatoes, and aioli.
The Avinyó brand is produced by the Esteve Nadal family of Avinyonet del Penedès. The winery is located at their home “Can Fontanals” in the heart of the Penedès region of Barcelona. On the label of each bottle of Cava there is an inscription in Catalan representing the philosophy of the family. The inscription roughly translates into the following: “From the must of the flower (the free run juice) and with the rigor of a work well crafted.”
The patriarch, Joan Esteve, planted vines of Parellada, Xarel-lo and Macabeo 50 years ago so that he could have sparkling wine for himself and his friends. Today, his two sons and daughter carry on the tradition of Avinyó.
2015 Do Ferreiro Albarino $29.99*
This winery, founded in 1973, is currently run by Gerardo Mendez. Gerardo owns 5 hectares. Three hectares are over 50 years old and one is 200 years old. The vineyards follow organic guidelines avoiding the use of pesticides and non-organic fertilizers. Utilizing the latest technology, Gerardo blends the traditional with the modern to produce lively, crisp wines true to their origin. There are two wines produced at the property. The first Albariño Do Ferreiro and the second, produced in very in very limited quantities is Ferreiro Cepas Vellas. The Cepas Vellas is from the vineyard that is 200 years old. These vines are planted on a hillside vineyard of mainly sandy composition that predates any other vineyards in Rias Baixas. The Albariño Do Ferreiro is also from a hillside vineyard greatly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean climate.
Robert Parker 92 Points: There is a nice layer of white flowers, sea-infused aromas and some lemon zest freshness. But the minerality and salinity are more obvious in the palate, where the wine shows very tasty and precise, ripe and intense.
2015 Finica La Mata Ribera del Duero $19.99*
Produced from 100% Tinta del Pais vines between 60 to 80 years old planted in a single vineyard with a great variety of soils from clay at the bottom of the slope to gravelly sand at the top.
Vinous 91 Points: Aged for eight months in 80 percent French and 20 percent American oak barrels, one-third of them new. The wine is inky purple and gives Smoke-accented blue fruit and violet pastille aromas, along with hints of incense and licorice. Sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors smoothly blend richness and vivacity and pick up a spicy nuance as the wine stretches out. Closes smooth, long and appealingly sweet, featuring sneaky tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit.
2015 Costers del Priorat Petit Pissarres $24.99*
Costers del Priorat wines emphasize nuance and elegance over power, a philosophical departure from the strong, tannic wines that once defined Priorat. The blended cuvées paint a broad picture of the landscape, while the single vineyard wines showcase the individual microclimates of this diverse appellation.
