Castiglion del Bosco

As a protected nature preserve within the Val d’Orcia Parco Naturale, Castiglion del Bosco boasts spectacular natural beauty. Nearly three-fourths of the Estate is blanketed in forest — home to cinghiale, deer, fox, porcupines, badgers, hawks and pheasants. Each season a diverse selection of flora add visual drama and fragrance — Italian Stone Pine, Chestnut, ancient oak, olive trees, stately Italian cypress and smaller species like bay laurel, thyme, rosemary, brilliant red poppies and acres of terraced grapevines.

While winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco has been a craft for centuries, until fairly recently the vineyards were cultivated solely for personal consumption by each family living on the Estate. Today, Castiglion del Bosco wines are consistently recognized for their excellence.

As one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, the organization that regulates and controls the quality of Brunello production, Castiglion del Bosco introduced the world to its exemplary vintages through the emergence of a commercial operation in the late 1950s. In 2004, acclaimed international Wine Master Nicolo D’Afflitto took command of winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco, along with locally trained enologist Cecilia Leoneschi. Under their careful direction, the Estate is yielding more modern Brunellos that are attracting critical acclaim. The fundamental goal of winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco is to remain faithful to the land and the characteristics of the grapes.

2006 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino $29.99*/Btl

“The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a beguiling bouquet of pipe tobacco, herbs, licorice and sweet spices. Layers of well-delineated fruit follow, supported by silky, elegant tannns. The wine is beautifully open and expressive today, but aromas and flavors are a touch forward for the vintage, suggesting it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.”
