As the story goes, Hannibal the Conqueror came through the valley of this estate with his elephants and a 100,000-man army sometime around 200 B.C. on his way to attempt to conquer Rome. No one now knows whether the account is true, but the estate has been in the same family’s hands for several centuries, and the owners have long been named Annibal in reference to the Carthaginian conqueror. Time has passed; the name remains.
